Consultation has got a number of definitions. Some professionals define it as the act of meeting an expert with the goal of seeking advice. According to Cambridge English Dictionary, consultation is the act of exchanging Information and opinions about something in order to reach a better understanding of it or to make a decision, or a meeting for this purpose.

For Caplan, Consultation is a process of interaction between two professional persons-the consultant, who is a specialist, and the consultee, who invokes the consultant’s help in regard to a current work problem with which he is having some difficulty and which he has decided is within the other’s area of specialized competence. Without diverting from Caplan’s view, Gallessich J. in his book,“The Profession and practice of consultation”, he defines consultation as a tripartite interaction in human services agencies. For him, a consultant assists consultees with work-related concerns as the third component.

A consultant is usually an expertise or an experienced professional in a specific field and has a wide knowledge of the subject matter. By hiring a consultant, clients have an access todeeper levels of an expertise and also overcome the losses that would occur as a result of pursuing something that they are not well versed with.
